Bookbinding

I have always had an appreciation for books. They are windows into the minds of other people, sources of knowledge, culture, and inspiration. As much as I appreciate their easy accessibility today, there is something about mass-produced books that doesn’t do justice to their content. Quick and cheap methods of printing and binding have a shallow, impersonal feel to them. I wanted to learn how to combine quality materials, intricate methods, and careful skills to create books with a unique heart and soul. As a student of history and graphic arts, it only felt natural to merge the two fields of study and start a hands-on study of a big part of graphic arts history: the art of fine bookbinding.

I started from scratch with basic materials and a few tutorials, and got to work teaching myself how to create books the old-fashioned way. There was a lot of trial and error involved, but I was eventually able to create sketchbooks and journals for people to use and enjoy. When the word got out that I had taken up bookbinding as a hobby, people started bringing me old damaged books that they wanted to have mended. This opened me up to a new field of study, the repair and restoration of antique bindings. Despite having no formal education in the subject, I have been able to learn a lot from books and online resources, as well as tinkering with some of the old tomes people have brought to me.

Check out this page to see videos of some of the custom journals and sketchbooks I’ve made for people.
